Pterigio

El PTERIGIO es un crecimiento de tejido de forma triangular sobre la parte blanca del ojo, que con el tiempo se extiende sobre la córnea. Este tumor puede permanecer pequeño, o crecer lo suficiente como para interferir con la visión. A menudo, un pterigio se desarrolla a partir de una pingüécula. Algunos pterigios pueden ponerse rojos e inflamados y algunos, pueden crecer a ser grandes y gruesos, produciendo sensación de cuerpo extraño en el ojo. Se puede trartar con gotas para aliviar estos síntomas. Si el pterigio es lo suficientemente grande, puede afectar la forma de la superficie de la córnea, causando astigmatismo y afectando la visión. En este momento decidimos tratarlo con cirugía.

Degeneración Macular

La Degeneración macular es una de las causas principales de pérdida de visión en los envejecientes. Es una condición progresiva que afecta la visión central causando disminución y pérdida de nitidez y precisiónal detalle. La mácula se encuentra en el centro de la retina, la parte de atrás del ojo. Esta recibe las imágenes y las convierte en impulsos eléctricos que se transmiten por el nervio óptico hacia el cerebro. Cualquier condición que afecte este área, va a afectar la agudeza visual. Hay dos tipos de degeneración macular. La degeneración macular “seca” es la más común y ocurre cuando hay destrucción lenta de las células que componen este área. Hay pérdida lenta de visión central y se vé borroso en el centro del campo de visión. El otro tipo de degeneración macular es la “húmeda”. Esta ocurre cuando hay acumulación de líquido debajo de la mácula causando distorción visual y pérdida rápida de visión central. Un síntoma temprano del tipo mojado es el de ver líneas normalmente rectas, onduladas. El tratamiento de la degeneración seca consta de seguimientos regulares con su oftalmólogo y verificación del estado y progreso por medio de tomografias oculares (OCT) y el uso de antioxidantes en cantidades altas específicas ayudan a prevenir el progreso de la condición. El tratamiento de la degeneración húmeda consta de cirugía de láser, terapia fotodinámica e inyecciones intraoculares de inhibidores de factor de crecimiento (anti-VEGF).

Retinopatía Diabética

La retinopatía diabética se refiere a unos cambios en la retina que se pueden ver en pacientes con diabetes. Estos son causados por cambios a nivel de los vasos sanguíneos en la retina. Pueden ocasionar cambios severos en visión hasta la ceguera. Es importante el examen anual en pacientes con diabetes para poder identificar esta condición en etapas tempranas y tratarla lo antes possible. Para prevenir cambios o progreso de la retinopatía, los pacientes deben controlar su nivel de azúcar en la sangre, la presión del cuerpo y el nivel de colesterol.

Cataratas

Le llamamos cataratas a los cambios en el color del lente natural del ojo que ocurren por la edad. Al opacificarse el lente perdemos la entrada de luz y la formación de la imagenes visuales en la retina. Por lo tanto, no vemos bien.

La única manera de corregir esta situación es por medio de cirugía . Durante la cirugía, se remueve la catarata y se reemplaza con un lente intraocular que puede ser monofocal, tórico o multifocal. El momento de operarse es cuando la visión impide su rutina diaria o la visión nocturna se ve afectada. Es importante hacerse su exámen oftálmico anual para detectar temprano estos cambios visuales.

Cataracts

A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens in the eye; so when something is disrupting the lens, it is hard to get a clear view. It is a result of a buildup of proteins in the natural lens. Everyone will develop a cataract at some point in their lives. It is most commonly associated to aging. Certain risk factors can accelerate the progression of a cataract such as smoking, diabetes, and steroids. Early cataracts may be treated with a change in your eyeglass prescription, however as the cataracts progress a new eyeglass prescription may no longer be effective in minimizing the effects of the cataracts on your vision. For visually significant cataracts, the treatment is Cataract Surgery. This is performed under local anesthesia. A small incision is used to remove the cataract and introduce an intraocular lens implant in its place. There are different lens options to choose from. Monofocal, toric or multifocal lens implants are available and should be discussed during your office visit to maximize your postoperative visual outcome.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is the second-leading cause of blindness worldwide. Most symptoms are hardly noticeable at first. The loss of vision occurs gradually over time due to damage of the optic nerve, which sends visual information from the eye to the brain. This damage is typically caused by increased pressure. A visual field test determines how much of the optic nerve has been damaged.

Pterygium

A pterygium is a fleshy tissue that is visible over the eye’s cornea. This tissue is an abnormal growth of the conjunctiva, a membrane that overlies the white of the eye. A Pterygium normally causes tearing, irritation and foreign body sensation. As it grows, it can reach a large size to obstruct the visual axis or cause increased corneal curvature (astigmatism). It can be treated with topical eye drops, ointments or surgically removed.

A complete eye exam involves a series of tests designed to evaluate your vision and check for eye diseases. These exams do not just determine how clearly you see from a distance and which lens prescription for glasses or contact lenses will give you the best possible vision. Glaucoma

Estos exámenes, determinan su receta de espejuelos o de lentes de contacto, identifican condiciones de los párpados, de la superficie ocular como el ojo seco o condiciones como cataratas, glaucoma, degeneración macular o retinopatía diabética, entre otras.

Macular Degeneration

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a common eye condition among people age 50 and older. There are two forms of AMD, dry and wet. It is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults. AMD gradually affects the macula, the part of the eye that provides central vision. In some people, AMD advances slowly and visual loss does not occur for a long time. In others, the disorder progresses faster and may lead to a loss of vision in one or both eyes. AMD does not cause complete blindness. It will only affect your central vision, leaving the peripheral field unaffected.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy, or diabetic eye disease, refers to eye problems that people with diabetes may present with as a complication of diabetes. This can cause severe vision loss or even blindness. It is caused by changes in the blood vessels of the retina. It is imperative that all diabetics have an annual retinal exam so that if any changes are seen, these can be treated or managed as soon as possible. To prevent progression of diabetic retinopathy, people with diabetes should control their levels of blood sugar, blood pressure, and blood cholesterol.
